Bad behavior was the norm here at the beach last week. Here are a few lowlights…
1) As noted, last week was the Hangout Music Festival. They actually had a few acts that I knew – the Dave Matthews Band, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Steve Winwood, Wilco, and Randy Newman. Too bad we didn’t get tickets, maybe next year.
As a result of the music, the beach was jammed with young people. A group of kids rented the condo across from ours. They got their money’s worth – dragging the living room furniture out on the patio, leaving the patio door open the entire weekend, and tearing the screen door off its hinges. There was a kid “sleeping it off” on the concrete patio; one of his friends came up and kicked him to wake him up.
2) Smoking & drinking are still among the most-popular beach activities. I’m amazed at the number of kids who smoke – and then use the beach as their ashtray. A young woman stood upwind of us as she puffed away; then she got in the Gulf and wrapped her legs around her boyfriend’s waist.
Drinking while in the Gulf is also big. We saw quite a few people carry two cans of beer into the water. They would bob along with the waves while holding their cans above the water, one can in each hand.
3) Not Clear on the Concept – the MojoWoman saw one drunken, rotund young man who was covered in sand and suntan oil. He announced that he was done with the beach for the day by telling his friends, “I’m going to the hot tub to get clean.” Fortunately, he wasn’t staying at our condo.
Wow – this column is becoming a gripefest. Actually, we’re having a great time at the beach. Besides, who wants to read about good behavior?
