It’s the first week of classes, so I was flaked by Thursday night. I picked up Grady Baby but it just wasn’t happening. Instead, I did my reading online. The big sports news of the day was pro football’s Chargers move to Los Angeles. I read a lot about that. The move got panned by just about everyone.
C was allowed to hear E’s story Thursday night, but she didn’t get one of her own. T read two chapters in By The Shores of Silver Lake. The chapters were good. In the first, The Ingalls family has to host all of the people heading west in the land rush. There is nowhere else for them to sleep on the prairie and they cannot sleep outside. Ma charges the rough men a quarter for lodging and a quarter for their meals. Some of the men bring a bottle of whiskey with them; Ma and The Girls hear the men carousing downstairs.
Pa, meanwhile, finally makes the run to Brookings to stake his claim. He finds that the town is packed and he cannot get into the land office on the first day. So, he sleeps outside the land office to be the first in line the next day. (So, it was kind of like camping out for concert tickets). As it turns out, Pa and another man want the same claim and a brawl ensues when the land office opens the next morning.
